DAVID BLAUVELT, MD

Dr. David Blauvelt is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Thomas Jefferson University and an attending physician within the Division of Critical Care Medicine at Nemours Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Blauvelt has an interest in utilizing bioengineering to advance the care of critically-ill children. His research towards building an oxygenator for an artificial placenta circuit has garnered several awards through multiple pediatric device consortia at UCSF, Stanford, and Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. More recently, he has been awarded grants through the Thrasher Research Fund and Delaware INBRE. Additionally his work in improving extracorporeal life support devices has led to 3 patent filings.

In addition to a committment to research, Dr. Blauvelt is dedicated to the development of the next generation of scientists and clinician-scientists. In the lab, he has mentored graduate students, undergraduates, medical residents, and clinical fellows. He has also volunteered as a capstone project leader for the Masters in Translational Medicine (MTM) program at UC Berkeley, guiding graduate students as they learned about various aspects of medical device product development, including value proposition, regulatory affairs, intellectual property, and business strategy.

Prior to coming to Nemours, Dr. Blauvelt earned a medical degree in 2015 through the Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology (HST) program. He completed his pediatrics residency at the Boston Combined Residency Program (BCRP) in 2018 and pediatric critical care fellowship at UCSF.
